Có một ban nhạc tôi ít khi nhắc đến trong blog, đó là ban nhạc The Bee Gees. Thời mới lớn ở Sài Gòn, Bee Gees là một ban nhạc tôi mê lắm: How Deep Is Your Love, Tragedy, When Someone Belonging To Someone, Living Eyes, Wildflower, rồi đến những bản nhạc họ viết cho Barbra Streisand và Diana Ross: Woman In Love, Guilty, Chain Reaction, v.v.
Well, trong khi ban ABBA mỗi người mỗi ngả tuy vẫn đủ 4 người, Ban Bee Gees từ 3 anh em, nay chỉ còn lại người anh cả là Barry. Vậy mà Barry vẫn can đảm tiếp tục sáng tác và trình diễn, mặc dù tuổi đã "thất thập cổ lai hy"! Lòng yêu nhạc thật say mê, tận tụy của ông khiến tôi thật cảm động. Ông rũ bỏ quá khứ - "it's time to grow up"- như ông tự sự gần đây, trong video #3.
Hai video sau sẽ làm những người từng yêu nhạc Bee Gees rùng mình, vì chất Bee Gees vẫn còn đó, nhưng hiện đại hơn và thấm vào giới trung niên hơn, làm họ không chỉ hoài niệm về quá khứ mà còn dư niềm tin vào một tương lai, với những "in the now" liên tiếp từng bước chân. Wow, đây là zen qua lăng kính Barry Gibb!

There is a music band I rarely talk about, that is the Bee Gees. When I grew up in Saigon (Vietnam), Bee Gees was one of my favorite bands with songs such as How Deep Is Your Love, Tragedy, When Someone Belonging To Someone, Living Eyes, Wildflower, or the songs they wrote for others such as Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross: Woman In Love, Guilty, Chain Reaction, etc.
Well, while the four members of ABBA are still alive but rarely have a union party (let alone play some music!), the Bee Gees from the three brothers now are down to just one: Barry Gibb. He is such a courageous man, in my mind, by continuing to compose and perform new materials, albeit he is now 70 years of age! I'm so moved by his dedication to his passion: music. He lets go of the past - "it's time to grow up" - as he explains in the following third video.
In the mean time, the first two videos will bring goose bumps to his fans, because the familiar Bee Gees musical traits are still there, but in a more modernized way, making very much sense to the baby boomers and the X-gen like myself more now so. His songs will bring to his fans not only nostalgic feelings about the past, but also give them more strength to live in the future, by successive "in the now", one step at a time. Wow, this is Zen though the mind of Barry Gibb!
